Hinterthal · Hochkönig

Triefen & Prinzensee

Water raining straight from the rock.

Hinterthal, at the foot of the Hochkönig: from the church, follow trail no. 415 almost level along the Urslau river up the valley to the Triefen – a curtain of water almost 100 metres wide, dripping straight from the rock. A natural monument since 2001, set against the Steinernes Meer. Afterwards, the side trip to Maria Alm is worth it: take the Natrunbahn up and walk 10–15 minutes to the Prinzensee – a mountain lake with views of Hochkönig and Steinernes Meer.

Gorges & cave in the Saalachtal

One day, three forces of nature.

The Seisenbergklamm, Lamprechtshöhle and Vorderkaserklamm are only around 5 kilometres apart – easy to combine in a single day. You cross the Seisenbergklamm gorge in Weißbach on boardwalks in about an hour. The Lamprechtshöhle in St. Martin is Salzburg's longest cave: 600 metres accessible on secured paths, 4–6 degrees all year round – welcome cooling at the height of summer. To finish, the Vorderkaserklamm: a 400-metre gorge with 51 boardwalks and 373 steps, in places just 80 cm wide at the bottom.

Insider tip

Start with the Vorderkaserklamm – it has the most climbing. On the way there: the Steinzeitweg with a life-size mammoth and sabre-toothed tiger, a hit with kids. The gorges are at their finest in the early morning.

Hermitage, Steinalm & summer toboggan run

Saalfelden's local mountain classic.

Right on the doorstep: from the Bürgerau car park, walk past the medieval Lichtenberg castle up to the rock hermitage (Einsiedelei) – one of the last inhabited hermitages in Europe, built into the Palfen rock since the 17th century. Continue along the Weg der Stille, past the Kühloch – a 20-metre-deep cave portal – to the Steinalm at 1,268 m, a working alpine pasture with a petting zoo and wide views over the Saalfelden basin. The way back leads over the Biberg. If you like, ride the summer toboggan run down the last stretch: 1.6 km, 345 vertical metres, 61 bends and 3 jumps. The run is closed in rain; the chairlift still operates.

Insider tip

The hermitage is inhabited from April to November – with a bit of luck you'll meet the hermit. And taking the toboggan run down not only spares your knees, it is the finest way to end the tour.

The Asitz in Leogang is not an ordinary mountain. Here, nature merges with experience.

Flying Fox XXL

1.6 km. 130 km/h. Head first.

The Flying Fox XXL in Leogang – one of the longest and fastest steel cable slides in the world.

It starts at Sport Mitterer by the Asitz cable car in Leogang. Take the cable car up to the mid-station, strap in – then head first, face down, 1.6 kilometres over forests, meadows and streams, up to 143 metres above ground. Speed? Up to 130 km/h. Braking? Automatic. The feeling? Indescribable. A shuttle waits at the exit to take you back to the start. Nothing like this exists anywhere else in the Alps.

From DAS SAAL: bus to Leogang, Asitz cable car from Sport Mitterer, mid-station, Flying Fox. Total approx. 40 minutes to the start. Advance booking recommended – especially in high season.

Tipp

Combine the Flying Fox with the Sinnepark. Start point and Sinnepark are right next to each other at the mid-station. Sharpen your senses for a few hours, then fly into the valley at 130 km/h.

Climbing: Dozens of challenges.

The Leogang Steinberge and Steinernes Meer are among the best climbing areas in the Northern Limestone Alps.

The Steinberge mountain sports region combines over 1,000 sport climbing routes, alpine multi-pitch climbs and 12 via ferratas – all within 25 minutes by car from Saalfelden. From family-friendly climbing gardens to the Pinzgawurm with 45 pitches in the 1,400 m Birnhorn south-east face.

Good to know.

Most starting points are reachable by bus or a short drive. The ski bus to Leogang stops right at the hotel door. The Mobility Card is available free of charge at reception.

Yes – no climbing experience needed. Minimum age 10 years, weight 35–110 kg. Staff secures you completely. Advance booking recommended, especially in high season.

The Sinnlehenalm (149 m, approx. 1:25 h) is ideal for families. Alpine delicacies and panoramic views at the top. Alternative: Leo's Game Trail at the Asitz (1.5–2 h puzzle hunt for children).

For via ferratas: climbing harness set, helmet and sturdy mountain boots are mandatory – all available for rent at local sports shops. For the Felsenfest climbing hall: everything available on-site.

Felsenfest climbing hall (500 m / 5-minute walk, 1,700 m² climbing surface), Museum Schloss Ritzen, or a cosy day at the hotel with sauna and restaurant.
